Prof. Tekla Tammelin

Tekla Tammelin is a Research Professor in Biomaterials Engineering at VTT and Docent in Bioproduct Technology at Aalto University. She is a deputy director of Academy of Finland funded joint competence center for the Materials Bioeconomy between Aalto University and VTT (www.finnceres.fi). Her research strategy exploits the inherent features of plant cell wall systems and its components, and the concepts draw the inspiration from plant-based material assemblies and functions. Her scientific aim is to bridge the gap between interfacial and macroscopic behaviour of complex plant-sourced materials and further provide new aspects on strategies to construct viable bioinspired solutions. These concepts include e.g. nanoenhanced membranes, gas/vapour barriers and vapour responsive materials, nanopatterned optical structures, and immobilisation templates for proteins and living cells. One key target is to expand the biobased materials research field by combining biology with materials science and biotechnology. Here, the recent effort has been realized by introducing a leaf-inspired solid-state cell factory concept to be developed in H2020 FETopen project (www.futuroleaf.com)
