SUNERGY stems from the preparatory actions SUNRISE and ENERGY-X . The merging process is currently under development, starting by the organisation of SUNERGY's Scientific and Industrial Boards, including representatives from ENERGY-X & SUNRISE initiatives, together with other stakeholders. The initiative aims to remain open and inclusive, joining a large community to advance towards a concerted action for bringing Europe further in the area of circularity and renewable energy.
The Coordinator of the initiative is Bert Weckhuysen (Utrecht University) and the Deputy coordinator Frédéric Chandezon (CEA - Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives). The other members of the academic board are: Jens Nørskov (DTU - Danmarks Tekniske Universitet, ENERGY-X CSA coordinator), Huub de Groot (Leiden University, SUNRISE CSA coordinator), Robert Schlögl (Max Planck Society, Fritz-Haber Institute and Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion), Joanna Kargul (Warsaw University), Gabriele Centi (European Research Insitute of Catalysis, University of Messina) and Carina Faber (Université catholique de Louvain).
The Industrial Board is chaired by Maximilian Fleischer (Chief Expert Energy, Siemens Energy). The composition of the board is still under discussion, the confirmed members so far are: Marie-Godard Pithon (Performance and Investments Director, VICAT), Poul Georg Moses (Director Exploratory R&D, Haldor Topsøe), Jan Mertens (Chief Scientific Officer R&D, BE, Engie), Anastasios Perimenis (CCU Officer, CO2 Value Europe), Philippe Jacques (Managing Director, EMIRI - Industrial Research Initiative for Energy Material), Andreas Förster (Research Management and Conferences, DECHEMA), Alex van der Made (Senior Principal Expert, Shell).
The boards and the support office: Kathrine Bjeregaard Nielsen (DTU), Elena Guarneri (DTU), Lars Brückner (DTU), Laura Lopez (ICIQ), Martina Radli (Utrecht University), are working towards the following aims:
• Coordination & management of SUNERGY
• Community building & strengthening
• Communication & outreach
• Working towards a large scale SUNERGY European Research & Innovation Initiative
Further organisational points and working groups are currently under discussion and advances will be disclosed as soon as possible.
The two consortia merging into SUNERGY: SUNRISE and ENERGY-X, are formed by 30 partners from 14 European countries (see https://www.energy-x.eu/core-partners/ & https://sunriseaction.com/consortium/).
The two initiatives bring together a community of around 300 supporters (see https://www.energy-x.eu/stakeholder-support/ & https://sunriseaction.com/support-us/) from academia, industry, NGOs, governmental and local authorities. Support comes from more than 25 countries around Europe and beyond (including USA, Africa and Australia).
This is a growing and open community, we are currently receiving expression of interests from any institution that would like to be involved, through our Support Letters Campaign. The support of all interested parties is needed to keep advancing together towards a large-scale instrument for sustainable fuels & chemicals. Join us!
